I'm collecting data on growth mindset and goal setting from my 2nd and 3rd grade students. I am collecting this data for my research project- which aims to discover if there is a correlation between growth mindset and goal setting in relation to student math achievement.

I think both your qualitative and quantitative data collections are beneficial to both answering your driving question, as well as, to enhancing the purpose of the project and promoting student growth. It is so wonderful that your data can drive your research, as well as, student achievement! In regards to your quantitative data, is the process of student recording of weekly smart goals the quantitative data or the actual increase in progress on ST Math? Are you hoping to see a correlation in any growth on ST Math or in growth that meets the goal set by each student? How were the goals selected and are they individualized for each student or are the goals the same, but with differing starting points in accordance to where students were in ST Math when this research began?

Thanks! I'm going to be measuring both the total progress they've made on ST math, and measuring how they've done meeting their self selected goals. The students create their own goals, so they're all completely different based on where they are now and where they want to be. They show their partners and we talk about whether it's a smart goal, and I give general guidelines for where they should be!

I like the idea how you have your students track their weekly goals. It is not pressure for the students since they have consist practice. Great way to get their quantitative data.

On a good note, I read that you have more of an opportunity to reinforce mindset at the elementary level given a recent research study I read titled "Testing the Difference between School Level and Academic Mindset in the Classroom: Implications for Developing Student Psycho-Social Skills in Secondary School Classrooms" - worth a gander if you have an opportunity

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm going to take a look at that, I still need one or two more good research studies for my paper. I have tons of articles, but finding peer reviewed research has been more challenging.
